Free TV of Yesterdays Gone By

The last time I recall free TV programming I wasn’t much more than a young whipper snapper.  We had four channels.  CBS, PBS, ABC and NBC.  This was a real treat according to my mom.  She recalls back in her day before televisions were available.  Radios were the primary source of entertainment for those with privilege enough to afford it.  For her, their first TV came when she a little older.  I have heard stories about having to demagnetize the screen and how the picture was always green.  I know, I would have guessed black and white.  But for whatever reason, their TV was green.

I don’t know when my grandparents updated their television.  The summers I lived with them the TV picture was in color, or static.  It was inside a big box console.  There were two knobs.  The top knob was the channel finder.  The bottom knob must have been for tuning.  When we turned the bottom knob the picture would a) stay the same b) get worse or c) get better.  When the top knob fell off, we used a pliers.  That pair of pliers spent more years on the top of the television than it ever did in a tool box.

With Rabbit Ears There Was No Need to Eliminate Your TV Bill — You Didn’t Have A Bill!

My favorite part of the old televisions from the pioneer days (ha ha ha…can’t resist) are the rabbit ears.  The person who envisions a furry little pet with lop ears, nope, you are wrong!  Only the youth of our country has no clue what I am referencing.  Rabbit ears refer to an antenna on top of the TV console to help with reception.  Fancy ones had a dial for fine tuning.  Otherwise, you pull the antenna out and arranged them at angles to reach the airwaves better in hopes of producing a more clear picture and sound.    The only additional trick was to wrap each antenna end with aluminum foil.  The foil served as a conductor of the waves.  Or at least we thought that was the case.

A New Channel Hits the Airwaves

Around the early 1980’s, mid-80’s, a new channel hit the lineup.  Fox!  It was exciting to have one more option.  I recall the new station introduction because it was there I watched the most scary movie I have ever seen.  Sure, I watch it now and laugh at the lack of special effects and HD quality picture but back then it was terrifying.  The movie was called “Beyond the Door”.

Limited Programming Hours

Not only did we have limited channels to choose from, the hours of programming were limited.  I have never been a morning person.  For that reason, I am unable to say with confidence what time the morning programming began.  However, I believe we were up for Saturday morning cartoons around 7:00 AM.  Then evening news was at 9:00 PM and stations signed off by 10:00 PM.  Maybe it was 11:00 PM.  Carol Burnett & Friends and The Benny Hill Show were on after the news.  Of course, it was probably on Friday night and Saturday Night Live aired on Saturday nights.

MTV Becomes the Rage

A product of the 80’s is MTV.  Music television.  The introduction of music videos.  And it was aired 24/7.  Cable television was a new thing before MTV came around but we were a single parent household.  That meant the only time my brother and I could watch MTV was when we were at someone else’s home.  I loved babysitting late nights.  I put kids to bed and watched cable until the parents came home.  Plus I was paid to do it!  I watched video after video because I didn’t want to be the only kid at school who hadn’t seen the latest videos.

MTV’s popularity enhanced the fan experience ten fold.  It was like having direct access to all our star musicians.  We could now copycat their looks immediately following each new video release.  The best example that comes to mind is Motley Crue.  They rocked the spandex and wild prints, big hair and full on attitude.  Therefore, as did I.  Recently, my son had a school program themed around the 80’s.  He told me he was supposed to dress like the 80’s.  No problem-O!  I bought a big bottle of hair spray and started ratting away.  Applied some makeup to his face, big streaks across his cheeks (Adam Ant style).  My son’s comment, “What were you guys thinking”?  I rolled in laughter.  I don’t know what we were thinking.  But I am seeing some hints of an 80’s return.  Lookout!

Aside from MTV, sitcoms found their home in the 80’s.  Along with VHS tapes.  at first it was getting the VHS player, rent movies and “PLEASE BE KIND AND REWIND”.  Then blank tapes were available and people could record their own program favorites on the tapes.  This was great.  We didn’t have a ton of re-runs, this way you could re-watch your favorites at your convenience.  Alas, the entertainment industry caught on to this and began producing sets of Sitcom Seasons and began selling them with high quality production, already taped for you in a nice package!

Influence of Television in the 90’s

Dancing styles and fashion are definitely products of the 90’s television influence.  Remember Fresh Prince of Bel-Air?  The infamous dance called The Carlton originated on this show.  In Living Color…with the Fly Girls?  After all, that was the start of J-Lo, Jennifer Lopez, for any of you that crawled out from under a rock yesterday.  How about Growing Pains?  Mike Sever lived in his own room above the garage.  How cool was that?  For home remodels it was the ultimate solution giving the oldest teenager some privacy yet still at home under the parents’ roof.

Saved by the Bell was the show to instigate teens wanting cell phones.  Big, old clunky phones.  And Married with Children was the 90’s answer to the missing favorite 70’s All in the Family.  Al Bundy’s habit of resting his hand inside the waist rim of his pants started the Dad’s couch potato pose for sports shows going forward.  The every Sunday during fall season NFL games.  The 90’s influence is still strong today!

Overall, the biggest changes in the 90’s to television was that people were more exposed to risque programming due to internet freedoms.  The introduction of the internet and its rapid popularity had people flocking to online surfing drawing attention away from classic television.  The response of television became the expansion of cable television programming.  Cable programming offering less restrictive programming, additional series, such as Sex and The City and The Sopranos.  HBO was the leader of cable television.

Turn of the Century

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Friends, Grey’s Anatomy, The Sopranos and comedy sitcoms such as The Office and Parks and Recreation.  These are all part of televisions greatest hits coming from the 2000’s.

Along with these the VHS was left behind and replaced by the DVD player, then came the Blue-Ray Player.  More and more programming for hit television is scheduled on cable networks.  And digital recording is practically now a standard feature.

In addition to the turn to cable networks are the streaming networks using internet connections.  However, most require a subscription service.  None of these are necessarily inexpensive.  They all have a catch somewhere in the services.  Great introductory offers that eventually lead to outrageous bills.
