Room Rates Under Negotiation
Having worked in the hotel industry a number of years ago, I am a little familiar with how those room rates were negotiated. For the most part, there is a tier of hotel rates with certain discounts falling under specific tiers. At the top is the List Rate. Retail Price. The most you will pay for this room type on any given day.
Now, the next room rate is typically your RACK RATE. This is a rate hotels use for walk-in guests not using third-party agencies for travel bookings or under group bookings or other discounted travel programs. For those not well versed in travel, hearing “I can give you our rack rate for the night” might sound like magic. Because you have not been forced to pay the full price, still get a discount, but not by much.
Disclosure on Wheeling and Dealing
I suppose I should probably disclose here that while I worked in a couple different hotels, each had a little different approach to negotiating room rates. Some were greatly more flexible allowing the front desk agent to wheel and deal when necessary. The goal always was to fill the hotel — 100% occupancy rate. Empty rooms, wasted revenue.
