Operation Swimsuit Body

In January we set our swimsuit fitting goals, otherwise known as our New Year’s resolutions.  They include a diet plan and workout plans.  All with intentions of preparing our bodies for swimsuits in the summer.  Grueling months in the dreary winter, exerting extra energy tackling gym equipment.  Taking the stairwell instead of the elevator.  Giving up our sodas for an attached at the hip water bottle.

Unfortunately, by mid-March or April, most of us lose sight of our New Year’s resolutions.  However, we still have the task of swimsuit shopping for the season.  When we look for a swimsuit, we need to make sure we find the right fit too.

KEY POINT!  VERY IMPORTANT – Keep in mind; Shop for a swimsuit NOT for how we WANT to look.  But for exactly how the body is RIGHT NOW.

Gear Up for Swimsuit Season

There are things to consider when swimsuit shopping.  First, decide the message you wish to convey based on the style of the swimsuit.  What do you want to put out there?  Do you want something to be sexy?  Maybe a little revealing?  Or are you more likely to find something that you want that’s vintage?  A more modest approach is your style.  How about a playful frolicking type?  Try bold and sporty.

Pulling off your unique fashion might include stripes and solids AND florals!  Then, it’s how you put them together that pulls it off.  Thus, making your style unique to you.  Get creative with several ways to blend different styles to make your own.  Mixing nostalgia with modern, patterns and colors, knit to metallic.  Regardless the style you like, it is very important to fit your style to additional factors.

Once a Favorite

Personally, my favorite swimsuit I ever owned was a one piece that looked like a two-piece only attached at the sides in a flirty twist with a high cut hip in black and a revealing halter top in a vibrant yellow.  I felt like the Queen Bee of the hive with the sassy sting of a wasp!

Think what you like and want:

  • Soft and feminine
  • Supportive and fitting
  • Sporty and confident
  • Sassy and flirtatious
  • Scalloped and strapless
  • Glamorous and classic
  • Spirited and bold
  • Halter and High-waist
  • V-neck or Falballa (flouncy trimming, like a ruffle)

To Meet Swimsuit Goals – Consider This:

Body Size & Shape

Body Size & Shape – Selecting the perfect swimwear must include more than just the style you like.  My body type at the time of my Queen Bee suit was much younger than I am now.  Pre-Freshmen 15!  Before marriage and children.  The same suit today on me would look ridiculous.  Now, there are women fortunate enough to maintain their high school bodies.  Hooray for them!  Others luckier than that IMPROVE their bodies with age.  A swimsuit with a ruffle to hide a poochie tummy might now be a six pack of abs that cry to be on display in a two-piece sporty set.

Body & Self Image

Body & Self Image – The swimsuit goal top priority makes it essential the swimwear fit your body-image and your self-image.  It’s very important to feel comfortable in your bathing suit.    The right fit makes all the difference in the world.  Nobody wants to be in a swimsuit that looks great on the body but leaves the feeling of being very self-conscious.  Therefore, find swimwear that builds your confidence.  Let go of feeling uncomfortable.  Really, quit hiding your body and feeling ashamed of your body image.

The body types

Common body types we recognize are the Apple, the Pear, the Hourglass and Straight.  We all fit into one of those categories.  Essentially, once we have established our body type, then we have a starting point for our swimsuit shopping. Let’s get a little more specific on the on how those body types are determined.

An Apple shape person typically has hips and bust of equal or near equal width.  Whereas the pear shape body has hips significantly wider than the bust including the waist.  The hourglass shape is characteristic of having both hips and the bust about the same width but having a narrow waist.  Last, the straight body shape, also called a ruler or banana shape, just means you’re slim all the way around.  One part of your body is accentuated over the other body parts.  No matter your shape, remember always, all shapes and bodies are beautiful!

Focus on Flattering

This is your chance to show off your best feature.  You decide which part of your figure is the most flattering.  Then, build your look to enhance that feature.  This is accomplished by utilizing the right fabrics.  Depending on the colors or fabric patterns you choose, you can draw attention to your best feature.  Here are some stand-by tips for getting you swimsuit shopping in the right direction.

  • Bright colors and patterns help highlight your best features.
  • Solid colors are perfect for hiding areas you don’t like.
  • Pale skin is softened with black or deep jewel tones, such as dark purple, navy, and maroon.

For dark skin, bright colors tend to be more flattering and help hide what you don’t like.

Before you leave the house

Traditional swimsuit shopping is an all-day trek.  Going from one place to the next in search of the perfect swimsuit. Some communities are fortunate because they will have specialty swim wear shops.  These shops have endless options and can usually meet the needs of everyone. However, these tend to be pricey swimsuits.  Plus, before you even leave the house, there are a couple things you want to double check.

  1.  Especially if you’re going to be doing any modeling of these suits while you’re shopping, it is recommended you take care of any unwanted hair in your nether region or your armpits.
  2. Be sure you are wearing fresh underwear. This is for sanitary reasons and quite frankly no one wants to purchase a swimsuit having been worn by someone else.
  3. Reconsider that shopping trek.  Shop here online to find exactly all you need in the privacy of your own home.  Online shopping and home delivery is not the future anymore.  It is the NOW and growing stronger and more mainstream in the future!

Bountiful Bulges

Depending on how we feel about our thicker or more voluptuous areas of our body, we may try to add or hide volume.  To add volume (such as to the bust or hips), choose a piece with ruffles in that area.

Hide your volume areas (such as on the waist), by using shirred fabric.  Don’t be afraid to buy separates that don’t match perfectly! Mix-n-match is playful.  It allows you to find a right fit suit and make your personality statement at the same time.  Say you want to highlight your bust but draw attention away from your hips. You might buy a bikini top in a bright solid or pattern, and a bottom that’s a dark black, blue or brown (depending on the top)

Selecting the Right Fitting Suit

The last thing you need to experience is diving into a pool to swim a couple laps only to realize your top has fallen off.  The point is to consider the circumstances and environment for the suit you are wearing.  For example, you are going to the gym to swim laps for an exercise workout.  A one-piece is streamlined. It will withstand the more aggressive activity level than a bikini will.

However, when your plans include a day at the beach soaking up the rays, then a bikini would fit the bill.  Wear sunscreen though.  Skin cancer occurs commonly from people not caring for their skin needs in the sunshine.   The suggestion is the more active you are while wearing your swimsuits, the more important it will be to have a supportive and comfortable swimsuit

Swimsuit Cut

This refers to the sewing pattern of your swimsuit.  A flower pattern or stripe pattern refers to the style and fabric pattern.  The cut is how this pattern design will look on your body.  High waist cut versus high hip cut.  Strapless versus one shoulder or two shoulder straps.  Below are tips for selecting the right swimsuit cut for your body type.

Top Tips

  • Halter tops draw attention to the bust, as do triangle tops.  Sort of like pasties with spinning fringe!
  • Tie-front bikini tops draw the eye to the bust. Plus, this pulls the breasts closer to one another. Effectively, making the breasts look larger. If you have small breasts and want them to look larger, this might be a good fit.
  • Bandeau tops make the bust appear wider. If you’re a pear shape and you want to imitate an hourglass shape, choose a bandeau top with ruffles or another busy detail.
  • For a large bust, look for a straight across cut at the top of your swimsuit with wide set straps to minimize your bust. Try a bikini top with an underwire and a thick chest band for extra support. A thick chest band prevents jiggling.  That is a super-secret for big-chested ladies.  So, the bra stays where it is supposed to on the chest and your girls don’t fall out.

Bottom Tips

  • A one-piece will hide your waist. Take it a step further and hide the tummy too.  Choose one with shirred panels over the stomach, or in a dark, solid color.
  • 1940s-style, bathing-beauty bottom that’s high-waisted can also help hide a waist. Again, go with a dark color or shirring.
  • High-cut bikini bottoms make legs look longer. If you’re short, or you’re long in the torso, this is a good selection.
  • The tankini will highlight your waist, because it draws the eye to the section of skin that’s showing. If you love your waist but not so much your hips or bust, choose this.
  • Boyshorts make your hips look wider, regardless of color. If you have a large bust and want the hips to match for a classic hourglass shape, choose boyshorts. However, be aware that this style can feel uncomfortable for some women, so be certain of the fit before you purchase anything.
