Testing Page for 5.0 WordPress

This is my first paragraph for 5.0 WordPress. This is trial and error first run opinion.  I did not select any icons to type this, I just began typing.  Now, I notice to my right there is a menu for text settings.  It includes font size of small, normal, large, huge or you can do custom.  It also gives the opportunity to do a Drop Cap.  This means the first letter of the paragraph will appear very large.

I ended my sentence and hit enter and was automatically starting a new paragraph text block.  To the right is also Color Settings.  I often use blue and the bold feature for making text or links stand out.  When I hit the blue button, the entire block turned blue.  But to get the bold, I had to hover my cursor over the text to see the menu bar above the block that gives the option to make it bold.

Entered for the next paragraph and the color automatically returns to black.  There are not as many color options as before and no custom color options that I can tell at this point.

The Extras we Use are Hidden under the + sign with the circle around it!

  1. Find the Plus sign with the circle.
This should be to your left of the paragraph block.
The very last option is for Yoast Structured Data Blocks.
This is what that looks like and does.
Notice at the bottom of this block it gives you an arrow down, add image, trash can icon and plus with circle sign again.  That plus with circle sign or the centered below BOTH will add another step.

  2. The third step is now the second.

  3. Second step
It looks like the arrow up and down button will allow you to arrange the steps in a different order.

In order to leave the Structured Data block, I had to just click outside any of the step boxes.  I could not re-size the image after inserting it but the insert image process and screens looks exactly like the old one…at least for me on my system.

To My right of the paragraph block is the letter T.  Click on that to insert a Heading.

Hover over the text in the heading box and above the box will appear a floating option box for which heading you want.  Bold, italics, links, etc.

When you first click on the plus sign to the left, you will see the “Most Used Options” icons as “Common Blocks”.  But scroll down to see other settings like you would from your home page of your back office.  Layouts, widgets, embeds, etc.

However, change the common blocks option and scroll down to find FORMATTING.  Click on this and you will find the option for classic.

I entered to open a new paragraph block because you have to choose formatting before you begin typing in a new block, or so it appears.  Once you begin typing the circle around the plus on the left is replaced with arrows.  Again the arrows will rearrange the blocks, so it seems.  But when I selected the classic formatting, this particular block appeared WITH the editing menu we normally see across the top of our edit page with heading, bold, italic, align, links, text color and more.  It is at the top of this block and I do not have to hover over the text to see it.

When I hit enter in the classic format, it does not open a new block.  But I don’t see here how I can insert an image without leaving the classic format and going back to blocks.

Back to Block Format

Yes. I had to click outside the classic block to go back to block style formatting.    Appearance is the most difficult thing to adjust to I think.  On my screen I have easily two inches of white dead space on either side of my paragraph blocks making me feel like I am within confined margins.

Needs more sub-headings.

Otherwise, the readability and focus keyword are still shown at the bottom with the color coded faces on them.  On the upper right hand top of the screen under my bookmarks, I can click on the yoast icon and see my readability, focus keyphrase, etc. there but then I have to hit the settings (gear-looking icon) to bring back the text and color settings.  The 3 dots next to the yoast icon has the visual/text views of our edit page.  Instead of calling it text image though, it refers to code editor.

Now, under those same three dots, I see where it says full screen to avoid distractions.  I hoped it would remove the white space.  All it does is remove my menu bar on the left with dashboard, media, pages, comments, appearance, profile, tools, etc.  Basically, giving me more white space.

How to Insert a heading between already written blocks – see below!

To return back to the screen so I can see my menu on the left, I had to click the three dots again and then left click on full screen so the arrow would come off, more or less un-checking the option.

Not crazy about this new design for word press but – guess all this learning and adjusting keeps us on our toes, right???  LOL — hopefully, by the new year, this will all see like old hat already!  And if you feel like you need a shoulder to cry on — we are one heck of a family!  🙂

Here goes.

Before I go, thought I would test readability and SEO.  Readability was orange.  I highlighted the little eye like we normally do.  It highlighted for each paragraph.  I edited my paragraph fixing the issue.  However, it wasn’t saving for some reason.  Kept going back to before the edit.  After several tries of hitting save draft, it finally did.

Needs more sub-headings.

okay.  So the sub heading above.  I couldn’t figure out in seconds how to insert it between paragraphs or blocks already typed.  So I added it here, then clicked the arrow up until I decided to plunk it down between a couple other blocks.

How to Insert a heading between already written blocks – see below!

If you go to one of the other blocks either above or below where you want to insert a heading, then hover over the text and the floating menu will appear at the top of the block.  On the right of it you will see three vertical dots — not to be confused with the ones at the upper right hand of the whole page.  The dots you want appear only at the top of each block in block format.  Click on those 3 dots and you will see the plus with the circle sign and it gives you the option of insert above or insert below.  There you go.  🙂

SEO talk

Okay.  Now for SEO.  Not too bad.  Everything is down below as it was with classic.  On the right hand side you see the gear icon for settings.  It gives you the option for document or block.  Under block is the text and color but under document, you will find status & visibility, permalink, Url, slug, etc.

However, I usually copy/paste my title at the top of my page down to my snippet editor title is so I did the same for this.  When I did that, as I hovered over my title at the top of the page, another floating menu block appeared above it with my permalink there too.  Now, the one under document on my right doesn’t want to stay on document, so I have to be actively working on something under document I guess.

Before I go…

On the little three dots from the floating menu at the top of the blocks…there is also a duplicate option.  I hit that and duplicated one of my subheadings, then used the arrow down to position it to the next spot I could insert a heading.  Did I already say this???  hahaha — oh well!

And…under the document settings on the right, you will also see something called feature image.  I tried that and it had me upload a picture like normal.  But the picture appeared at the very top of my page prior to my first paragraph but in the block under the title of my page.  I couldn’t see how to move it.  And it didn’t look like I could re-size that one either.

OK.  I’ve given you all a glimpse of my experience.  Please share yours!  Mr. Paul Rankin.  Feel free to webinar on the new system!  My hats off to you!  Thank you for all you do!

Oh…Heyya!

I went to publish this.  Being all green SEO and readability thinking, why not?  It’s another page or resources or reference for someone right?  Well, up pops this, “Are you ready to publish?”.  I like that.  It says double check your settings.  Visibility.  Public, Private and Password.  Just like before.

Then it says Publish:  immediately.  But here, click on the down arrow and it pulls up a date and time schedule with a calendar!  Super handy tool if you want to write a Valentine’s Day page now, or New Years Day page and have it automatically publish at midnight on the day or whatever.  Think about our flash sales or Black Friday.

Also, if you write and type and realize you probably just rolled four paragraphs into one…you can go back and just hit enter to make it a new paragraph, like normal.  But it does separate it into its own new box.

With that…publishing immediately!  Good luck to all!!

Add-On Comment After Publishing

Add-on comment.  Published above.  Viewed page.  My first paragraph is not showing on published page — or on view page from edit side.  I thought it was because I used the drop cap.  So I duplicated the paragraph and removed the drop cap from one.  Still, the paragraph didn’t show — this time, neither one, the original or the duplicate.

Finally, did a copy/paste of the text and put it into a new paragraph block I inserted above the intended second block in blue text.  Then it seemed to work.  But I haven’t gone back to see if it will still work with the drop cap.  I will save that for another time.  I think I am wordpress 5.0 – out!  That’s over and out, good buddy!  10-4!  lol

Testing another image on wordpress 5.0

Interesting.  This time on my right I saw I could add a heading, a gallery or classic format.  I had to use the circle plus sign to get the floating menu above the next block to indicate I wanted to add a block using an image.  When I did, I was able to upload the image and then on the right menu side, under block, it showed image with a box for me to add the alt text and sizing options of thumbnail, small, medium or large.  Or you can enter width and height.  Then at the bottom it gives you the option to link your image.  Once I hit enter to begin this new paragraph, my image options went away.  Click back into your image box and it works again.
