FICTION TO FEED IMAGINATION

Fiction is something we all can use in our life.  Expand your entertainment and imagination.  Lacking today is the vibrant imagination of our youth.  Everything is presented to them.   Solved for them.  I see the most basic problem solving skills lacking.  Why?  Because they have no imagination for what something can do or become.

In our youth we had the luxury of hours of outdoor play.  Our families didn’t have extravagant budgets to buy all the hottest toys and trending gadgets.  We didn’t have gaming consoles and control sticks until we were in our teens.

Screen Time vs. Reading

Screen time was never a concern.  Saturdays we watched cartoons.  The rest of the week, public television.  Zoom. Electric Company.  Bloodhound Gang.  Of course, Friday nights were the Dukes of Hazard.  But that was it unless mom let us watch holiday cartoon specials or the Sound of Music with her.

Kids today are even leaving reading behind.  Why read?  What is the incentive?  A movie in 3D with special super killer special effects will sum up the whole book for them anyway.  Reading is boring and takes up too much time.

In My Other Worlds

But that is not what I remember from my youth. The story of Rebecca from Sunny Brook Farm enveloped me, I became lost in the words.  Rebecca was me in this secret world.   Ultimately, as I turned the pages, I became Rebecca, living her experiences.  Or when I read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.  I crawled in that Wardrobe too.  I felt the snow on my face when I entered the land of Narnia.  All Creatures Great and Small.

Book Collecting

Celebrate Alice In Wonderland through collecting. A classic tale indeed! Join us for discussion on book collecting and tidbits of interesting facts behind the story of Alice in Wonderland. Some may even shock you! Learn about the celebration of my favorite character, the Madhatter, too!

Seek Fiction and Build Your Imagination

I encourage you to explore the world of imagination further by shopping the Books & Games category where you will find all sorts of types of books.  Plenty to grab your attention and take you on a journey.  Sci-Fi, Animation, Mystery or Romance and a library full more!

Look for a Series

Find a good series!  Kids do like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series these days.  Likewise, Harry Potter is a favorite now.  But Little House on the Prairie series is just as entertaining as it ever was years ago.  For the adventurous reader, try the Lord of the Rings series.  Ladies, Clan of the Cave Bear was rich with history and struggles of one strong, independent woman.  Finally, Gentlemen, a must read is the series, The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, a 14-book boxed set.

Go Back to the Fiction Classics

First, the classics are the classics for a reason.  They stand the test of time.  Think about To Kill a Mockingbird.  This is a story just as relevant in today’s society and cultural importance as it was the first time it was published.

How about The Adventures of Huck Finn, The Lord of the Flies, and Catcher in the Rye?  George Orwell wrote 1984 and the world, the WORLD, was captured in his words.  Then, panic set in, people genuinely thought this book was real-life happenings!  Why?  Because he is a brilliant writer and WE ALL HAVE IMAGINATIONS!!

I urge you to leave your daily awareness, reality-driven daily activities.  Next, sit down in a comfortable place where you are unlikely to be disturbed or your time will be interrupted.  Now, grab that book of FICTION.  Open to Chapter 1.  And let go of yourself.  Get lost in the words.  Imagine you are that main character.  Mostly, ENJOY YOUR IMAGINATION!
