But what the enthusiastic RV and Motorhome drivers don’t anticipate is the wear and tear for these larger vehicles climbing up and down mountain roads.  The downhill especially dangerous with steep drop-offs, narrow roads, curvy roads with hairpin turns and no pull-outs.  Even some of the best maintained roads with pull-outs can be more challenging than one would expect.

A larger vehicle is likely to pick up more speed unintentionally than a smaller vehicle.  The weight, height and speed present a more dangerous situation susceptible to runaway vehicle situations, brake failure, vehicle fires, and more.  This is the exact reason why this guide is an essential tool for anyone who is planning to travel cross country whether as a Trucker, or RV or Motorhome driver.

Mountain Directory: A Guide For Truckers, RV And Motorhome Drivers

Living in Idaho most of my life, and along the Western states and coast, I am familiar with some of these mountain passages referred to in this book.  Having driven some of them, I understand the high use of brakes.  I have witnessed the big rigs stopped in the runaway truck ramps and think how grateful I am for that person to have made it to the ramp.  The other option is unthinkable.  Yet it happens.

A number of years ago, my brother and a friend had been up camping and hunting.  They drove into the small town for something, supplies or whatever, and the drive was curvy, steep and dirt road.  Going down the road, they came upon a large dust cloud.  On the other side of that dust cloud was semi-truck run off the road.  Immediately, they pulled over running to the assistance of the truck driver.  Unfortunately, what they found was the driver, instantly killed upon impact and a passenger thrown outside the rig, but also deceased.  In just those moments on that road, it became treacherous and ultimately fatal.  The driver was on his last haul before retiring, a married man ready to hang up his hat and spend his glory days with family.  The younger passenger was his trainee, just starting his career and life.
