Reminisce About Earlier Days
I can’t help to go down memory lane and smile when I browse this merchandise. I remember going to concerts and I always had enough extra money to buy a t-shirt. That is my souvenir. A t-shirt to wear on a regular basis and show my devotion as a fan. Also to give my teen personality and identity. It’s making a statement. T-Shirt History
It is believed the beginning of the t-shirt was around 1904. It was a modification to the long johns men used to wear. Traditional long johns have buttons up the front. With enough wear, the fabric can become loose which makes it easier for the buttons to not hold and instead expose the chest. This exposure does not suit the modesty of men during that era of time.
To deal with modesty, textile and clothing manufacturers explored types of fabric with stretch. The goal is to have fabric stretch over the head and still fit the body. The chest remains covered and modesty is preserved. This new particle of clothing hit it big with the Navy. The Navy soon required all its soldiers to wear a t-shirt under their uniform.
The White T-Shirt Evolves
According to one screen printing company (Melmarc), in the late 1930’s the Wizard of Oz made the big screen. This became the inspiration for the graphic t-shirt. A few years later, the first picture of a graphic tee appeared on the cover of the popular Life magazine.
Of course, the basic white t-shirt wasn’t just for the Navy. It became commonplace to see any WWII veteran wearing a military branch issued t-shirt. In 1951, another movie made the big screen once again influencing changes to the t-shirt. A Streetcar Named Desire starring Marlon Brando in a form-fitting t-shirt. This form-fitting was more than just fitting to the body, it snugged the torso. Men wanted to look like Brando and women wanted to be with the men that looked like Brando. Especially among younger adults and teens.
T-shirts grew to a multi-million dollar industry. Mickey Mouse leading the way for the printed shirt after Walt Disney gave rights to a company called Tropix Togs.
But it was music that focused attention on the graphic t-shirt as a symbol of cool. The Beatles had jump started the rock and roll era and, as the 60s rolled into the 70s, the bands that followed them issued t-shirts to promote themselves.
The T-shirt Becomes the Billboard
Iconic images — the Rolling Stone’s lips logo, Pink Floyd’s prism, Led Zeppelin’s blimp — were born and young fans were happy to literally be walking advertisements for their favorite musicians.
The 80s marked the era of emboldened logos. Guess, Nike and Adidas cashed in on the brand-mania with t-shirts sporting their logos. Although, the t-shirts with Mickey, the ones with a favorite band or musician, they didn’t go away. In fact, with music videos the fresh way to listen to music and the creation of MusicTV (MTV), t-shirts featuring pop artists had never been more popular.
At the same time, the surf and skate culture of Southern California was rising. Board-centric labels like Stussy, Billabong, Quiksilver and Maui & Sons rose to prominence, with a business driven by t-shirts, making the active west coast lifestyle accessible to everyone.
Today’s T-shirt Styles
As the new millennium began to unfold, vintage tees from the 60s and 70s, discovered in flea markets or found in the attics and closets of parents and grandparents, became collectibles. The introduction of techniques such as stone-washing, crackle, and burnout, recreated the worn-in look and feel of these coveted pieces onto new garments. The modern generation with the inside track on the future established their uniform with the graphic t-shirt as its centerpiece.
Fresh silhouettes, innovative fabrics, and advancements in screen printing technology continue to spur brands and artists. The graphic tee maintains its presence as the linchpin of visual statements in the modern wardrobe.
