Rolled French Toast with Choice of Fillings

Rolled French Toast is a quick grab-n-go treat. Which, in my book, makes it a great treat for in bed too. No silverware necessary. Pick it up with your fingers and enjoy. For a little extra effort (depending on the filling), you can make a sauce to dip these yummy delights in too! Or simply dip in fresh whipped cream. You won’t be disappointed.

  12. Remove from pan once golden and spring with a cinnamon sugar mix. Repeat until done.

To Serve:

Serve as is or with a medley of fresh fruit. You can drizzle syrup across the roll-ups, however, the rolled shape leads naturally to these being a great finger food and easily transportable. You may choose instead to have a syrup in a side cup for a dip.

Other dips may include chocolate syrup, whipped cream or a berry sauce, for example strawberry sauce. Once you know how to make this simple sauce, you can substitute the strawberries for other berries to make a variety of fruit sauces.

Other Suggested Fillers:

Substitute Nutella with softened cream cheese (or mascarpone). To hasten softening of the cream cheese, place in a bowl and microwave approximately 10 seconds at a time until easily spreadable. Then replace bananas with blueberries. Continue with directions of recipe as normal.

Strawberries and Nutella

Chopped nuts and Nutella

Sliced Almonds and Nutella and sl cheese and cherry pie filling

Peanut butter and banana

Peanut butter and mini-marshmallows (or marshmallow creme — however, it is difficult to spread evenly over the Nutella spread. But you can swirl it into the Nutella).

Involving Children in the Kitchen

This is a great recipe for involving young children in the kitchen. Giving them an opportunity to roll the bread and use the spread. If they maintain their attention span, you can get them to help layer the desired filling.

One way to promote sustained interest is to use colorful mini-marshmallows and rainbow sprinkles. Sprinkles inside, sprinkles outside! But when it comes to frying, I recommend that be left to the adults or older children under adult supervision (as necessary).

Where to Serve:

This is easily a great one for breakfast in bed. A finger food without silverware. Plus, younger children can feel they have participated in the big special surprise!

It is fabulous for a brunch buffet when given two or three dips to also choose from. The appearance itself is appealing and moves away from a traditional french toast giving it a novelty appeal.

On the Go:

Go big or go home on this one! Double the recipe, even quadruple the recipe. Make a big batch of these roll ups, then let them cool completely. Once cooled, wrap them individually in waxed paper first. Then plastic wrap, then bag them in a freezer-safe plastic bag. Store them in the freezer.

When you are running behind, just grab one out of the freezer and pop it in the microwave for about 30 seconds and head out the door. Kids will love these for breakfast and for quick after-school snacks.

Get Crazy; Go Savory

One of the greatest things about a simple recipe such as this one, is the ability to play with the ingredients. Your flattened bread and your egg mixture are your base, or foundation, ingredients. From there, you can concoct all sorts of combinations.

Try these savory combinations:

Pimiento cheese spread and diced ham.

Cream cheese, sausage crumbles and green chilies (drained).

American cheese and fresh bacon bits (do not use the imitation bits).
