My Look Into Making Travel Plans
Take it from me and my first hand experience without having travel membership with rewards as great as these, its too expensive! I had an opportunity to go and meet several colleagues nationwide in a big event here recently. However, not having enrolled in any programs before hand I really didn’t know what to expect cost wise.
The Flight
I figure it would probably be the cost of the flight to be the most expensive. Matter of fact, it was the second largest expense. I did just like everyone else when looking into planning a trip. Visiting Expedia, I typed in my dates of travel. I checked several popular sources online. Travelocity, Orbitz, BookIt, Priceline…keep going?
There were options to choose from but I needed simple enough and I wasn’t seeking fancy accommodations. I’ll pass on first-class. Not that I wouldn’t love to travel first-class, I was just thinking I need to get there with as little expense as possible. But the airline tickets round trip were looking to be the vicinity of $400-500.00.
The Hotel
The biggest expense was the hotel. For a single person in a KING size room, it was approximately $200.00/night before hotel room tax, tax and any other costs. I thought, WOW, first of all, I would be at an event the majority of the time I was there and not even spending time in the room. Then, with my return to the room, I only need a twin bed. Sure, a king bed is great to sprawl out all over the place but I am unaccustomed to that size of bed anyway and image it will feel horribly large and lonely. My entertainment is all outside the room and tied to our event. But to have to pay $200 to sleep for a few hours, shower and change clothing?
Finding a Bunkmate
My next option is to find someone willing to share a room and we go for the double Queen beds and split the cost of the room. I am not opposed to this idea. In fact, it makes a great deal of sense. Anytime you can pair up and help each other save money, why not? Well, except I haven’t met any of these people yet. Especially because I tend to be shy and private. Plus, I snore and family has told me I talk in my sleep too. I have no intention of being the reason someone else is sleepless. Therefore, causing the other person to lack energy. Then, that brings me back to square one. Between the flight and the hotel, it’s just too expensive! For this event, I had to pass. Regrettably, I stayed home. Meanwhile, the others reported back as having the time of their lives.
The Solution
Immediately, I started researching for ways I could travel for less. I looked into times of the year for best rates. But that doesn’t do me any good when someone else is planning the event, therefore, the event does not fall into the best rates season. I could get a credit card with airline rewards. No, not a good idea. That only encourages me to spend money using credit, potentially increasing my debt for otherwise un-needed or un-wanted purchases solely for the purpose of building points.
