Step 3 – Select Your Wine

Brief History of Wine in England
According to wikipedia, the Romans brought wines to England in the Middle Ages. However, the English were more likely to import their wines from regions of France. This carried on until 1703 when high duties were imposed. To avoid the duties on the wine, British wine lovers chose to wait for the ports and sherry wines from Spain to arrive on ships. These had a longer shelf life without the high duties.
The Decline of Wine Production for England
Wikipedia doesn’t elaborate on the production of wine in England other than to reference it was indeed being produced. In 1509, King Henry VIII was crowned and 11 vineyards were dedicated to the service for the royal family. In all, 139 vineyards were said to have existed. Then tumultuous times hit in mid-18th century and the wine production industry was affected. Factors such as epidemics, mildew, more tax changes that allowed for competitors to win out contributed to the decline. Food shortages during the war era and rationing led to vineyards converting to food production.
Bringing Wine to Today
In 1936, the wine industry in England gave indications it was coming back. It had, specifically, growth with at home brewing. The government imposed a short five year stint of outlawing the brewing of alcohol at home. But the popularity of home brewing grew despite the efforts of the government.
Still today, while the wine production in England is improving, it hasn’t reached peak heights other European and Western countries reached. Of their wines, you will most likely come across a sparkling wine. Production continues to improve, however concerns still hover over long term outlooks. Imported wines remain the preferred wine for the British folk.

This tidbit of information supports all the more reason it is just as easy to join the wine club. Your wines will be from the best vineyards in California’s Napa and Sonoma valleys.
