The Lure of Collecting Autographs
By Raab Collection – See Reference below
The past defines the present, and history provides the window through which we view its incidents and personalities, determine its impact, and shape our understanding of where we are today.
Autographs (by which we mean original letters, manuscripts and documents) picture events in their contemporary context, without the perspective of time and history, and the men and women in their own day and setting, with their own outlooks and opinions. They enable us to see and appreciate both the impact of people on events, and its corollary, the impact of circumstances on people. They also evidence great works of literature and science. Thus, autographs give us a unique access to the past and the tools to interpret that past.
But documenting history is not the only reason people collect autographs. A second is the desire to touch, and feel a connection to, an important figure from the past. As Thomas Madigan, renowned autograph dealer of yesteryear, wrote, “Between the present and the past there exists no more intimate personal connection than an autograph. It is the living symbol of its author.”
Though the incidents of life have changed utterly in the past two millennia, human nature has not. The ancients appreciated the importance of history, literature and science, and the key place autographs played in preserving them, no less than we do. They also wanted to feel a connection to their heroic figures. Thus, collecting autographs began not in the 20th century, nor even with the Victorians, but back in the mists of time with the Ancient Greeks, who regarded them with reverence.
Final Commentary:
My initial intent was to provide some history on collecting autographs. I considered exploring how to determine value of autographs. However, when I discovered the above statement on the Lure of Collecting Autographs, I realize it is so well written I couldn’t give it justice to change it or express it in my own words well enough. Instead, I am sharing the statement with you. For those interested in a more detailed history, I recommend you visit their website.
