Our Big Family Trip
Now, I know there has got to be a better way to travel than the way our family took our biggest family vacation. Growing up, as a family, we went camping every year summer. We had our annual camp trip with all the aunts, uncles, cousins and grandma and grandpa. That was my favorite! Sleeping on the ground in sleeping bags in tents; forget the air mattresses. Deer and chipmunks in camp, especially early in the morning. It was wonderful. Then there were other camping trips to other destinations. Those were fine too but not as much fun because our cousins weren’t there and it was usually a campground with other campers nearby. Strangers. Although most were friendly. Nonetheless, other campers were within a couple hundred yards.
There were a few trips to along the Oregon coast and to San Diego. We nearly always drove. The trip wasn’t quite like a National Lampoon’s Vacation movie. At least not until our Big Family Trip. This, of course, was a trip that by the time it was planned, I was nearly fifteen years old. Our beginning point was Boise, Idaho. Our destination was Raleigh, North Carolina. But the plan was to travel and hit all sorts of locations in between. Sites along the way and sites several hours off the travel route. This was on the way…and on the way back.
The Transportation
Realize this, we were riding in a Plymouth Champ pulling a tent camper trailer. A small car, two bucket seats in front and room for three in the back. It was myself, my 12 year old brother and my 4-month old brother. I didn’t have my drivers license and as kids, sitting up front for a “turn” was out of the question. Our trip lasted approximately three and a half weeks. Each night, pulling into some random campground. Thankfully, KOA campgrounds were not too far apart and hard to find. At least we could get in a real shower even though it was cold.

The Accommodations
Aside from climbing over everyone to get in and out to the outhouse and hearing everyone’s quirky sleep noises, well, still no! I didn’t enjoy the accommodations. It was a lot more fun to me when we were back at home with the camper set up and I could hang out with my friends in there and have sleepovers. Sneak out and walk to the convenience store for soda and candy. We could hook up the TV and VCR using extension cords to the house and watch movies too. But for the over three weeks family long haul, it was not fun!

A Summary of the Trip
I could spend days going into the details of different places we stopped. Such as Hannibal, Missouri. I loved all Hannibal had to offer of Mark Twain. The river boat cruise was great but I was trying to convince my parents I was miserable so I pouted the whole time. But I will never forget that boat ride. There was Mount Rushmore in South Dakota and the story of all the years of sculpting the mountains and the wonderful nature walk to the bottom of the trail with a quaint little sweets shoppe. Kittyhawk, North Carolina was amazing to see the origin of airplanes, until we got caught in a storm and our whole camper was saturated. We did stay in a hotel that night! The Devil’s Tower. The Four Corners of four states. Niagara Falls. Lady Liberty was under construction when we visited so missed that adventure. However, we did go to the top of the Empire State Building. Alas, never did get to have a New York Yankee Dog or that folded pizza!
In a Nutshell
I truly had no desire to be on that family trip. It didn’t end up being one of those special bonding trips either. But, I saw wonderful places here in the United States I would probably have never known about or seen in my lifetime. I am grateful for the experience in hindsight. I don’t know if you can really do a trip like that any other way than driving across the country. But now that I am an adult, my ideal travel destinations are a little more exotic than a KOA campground. I love traveling to Europe. However, it’s a little more expensive than the KOA’s.
