Sister Sasquatch – A Religion #1

Believing in Sasquatch is a religion.  It takes a great deal of faith to believe.  Those who have experienced the creature in person have a life changing story to share.  Stories similar to people purportedly having seen the white light of the heavens and come back from death.  Ultimately, the true believer does not need scientific proof of the influence and power of an idea.

What is a Sasquatch?

The description by definition

Describing Sasquatch can range from a very tall ape-like man to a spiritual apparition, possibly alien.  Most significantly noted, it has extraordinarily large feet.  Depending on which dictionary or book you refer to, a Sasquatch is just another word for Bigfoot.  Bigfoot is just an American version of a Yeti.  A Yeti is a large hairy creature resembling a human or bear.  It is said to live in the highest part of the Himalayas.  Furthermore, Yeti has been called an Abominable Snowman.

The Description by Physical Characteristics

Sasquatch can be as unique as human beings are individuals.  The hairy body, long arms, ape-like face and big feet are fairly common among all Sasquatch, except juveniles.  Generally, they are described as very tall, huge.  Reports tell of witnesses looking in the eyes of a Sasquatch though and feeling as if they are looking at another human being.

Witnesses describe variations in hair color and how much hair covers the body.  Apparently, like humans, these beings can be quite hairy or hairy but not all long hairs.  Another feature is the “no-neck” appearance.  Much like a gorilla, the head sits directly on the shoulders causing the upper body to move more with the head.  Humans have ability to turn their head to look over their shoulder without turning the upper body.

Another Physical Characteristic, But Not the Last

The next physical feature worth pointing out is the muscular structure of this huge creature.  Witnesses who have had close encounters report seeing muscle definition.  In fact, they have reported seeing Bigfoot’s muscles actually flexing as he walks.  Especially in his buttocks.  Now if that just doesn’t make you laugh.  Pardon the expression but…checking out Bigfoot’s ass!  Of all things!  Keep your focus on the eyes people!

The Population

The tendency is to refer to Bigfoot as a male living a solo life in hiding.  In fact, scientists speculate there to be thousands living across the United States and into Canada.  However, the Pacific Northwest is considered a favorite hot spot.  Despite the favorite being on the West, don’t let that fool you.  According to the BFRO (Bigfoot Field Research Organization), witnesses report encounters in areas mid-U.S. and in the Eastern states in impressive numbers.  Numbers like that suggest to any right-minded person, there are females too.  Babies and juveniles as well.  It’s basic bird and bees stuff here!

The term “Sasquatch”

Sasquatch, the word, means wild man or hairy man.  It originated in Canadian folklore.  Several definitions of Sasquatch are specific to it being part ape, part man with long hair covering its body.  Definitions include that it lives in the Pacific Northwest of the United States of America.  Some claim stretching into parts of Canada.  (Although witnesses from all over will tell you otherwise.  Seriously, to define such a targeted location is arguably irresponsible).

The term Bigfoot is coined after witnesses discovered extremely large footprints in California. This big creature has a high intelligence.  They agree the intelligence is comparable with men and some species of primates.  In addition, they concur the creature has digital dexterity.  This dexterity makes them capable of using their hands as tools or to create tools for use.  Secondly, several theories maintain Sasquatch is part of the primate evolutionary chain.  Perhaps a species of the Gigantopithecus.  Other theories suggest it is a missing link in the evolution of man.

The debate over what is a Sasquatch has such a wide range of opinions and theories.  However, we could spend days on the topic.  Most noteworthy, some have spent decades researching Sasquatch.  A few are dedicating their lifetimes to Sasquatch research.

What is Religion?

According to Vexen Crabtree in 2016, What is Religion? How Do You Define Religion?, the long definition reads as:

Religions are shared collections of transcendental beliefs.  The beliefs have been passed on from believers to converts.  Converts held by adherents to be actively meaningful and serious.  Either based on (1) formally documented doctrine (organized religion) or (2) established cultural practices (folk religion). In both forms, there are religious professionals who embody formal aspects of the religion.  Religious professionals who act in positions of leadership and governance.  There are certain rituals reserved for them to carry out. The beliefs generate practical implications for how life should be lived.

Religions often include:

  • Spiritual explanations of our place in the world in an attempt to answer questions about “why we are here”
  • Worship of deities and/or supernatural entities (including ancestors)
  • Conceptions of “holy” and “sacred” activities ideas and objects
  • Set rituals
  • Calendar events based on the changing seasons
  • Distinctive dress codes (especially for religious professionals)
  • Codes of morality and action that are given a mandate from a supernaturally great being, from a supernatural force or from the will of the Universe itself
  • And, a caste of privileged and exalted professionals who have particular claims to be in touch with transcendental forces

Similarities Between Sasquatch Belief and Religion

  • To date, there is no scientific proof of the existence of Sasquatch or a Higher Power.
  • Each has many followers with varying beliefs regarding its purpose.
  • Both require faith in the unknown.
  • Practicing that faith becomes a habit. (Quite literally for Roman Catholic Nuns!! — SISTER SASQUATCH!)
  • There are seekers of proof willing to turn every rock and listen to every witness experience.
  • Nay-sayers outnumber the followers.
  • Those who don’t believe probably don’t want you to try to convert them (in most cases).
